Whereas
many cities can only boast one gay area, Sydney boasts several, including
a lesbian village! Oxford Street in Darlinghurst is the traditional gay
village, but it has become more mixed in the last ten years. Nearby Potts
Point and Elizabeth Bay have become the home to the smart party set. Both
suburbs have a stunning harbour setting and are close to the nightlife
hub of Kings Cross. Further up Oxford Street you come to Paddington, once
a bit of a ghetto, its rich network of Victorian terraced houses have become
home home to a lot of well to do gay folk. Going inland a bit, you come
to Newtown, a big rival for Darlinghurst's mantle. For many years it was
a dyke suburb, but now it's pretty mixed with lots of boys moving in. Next
door Erskinville has a gay village feel and is being gentrified by an army
of gay folk. Leichhardt (known as Dykeheart) has a long history of attracting
the girls, as well as Sydney's Italian community. Redfern has long been
one of the less desirable parts of the city, but is coming up fast and
has its first gay pub. Many gay people have moved to the area in the last
few years.
