Mykonos has long been known
for its gay scene and continues to attract gay visitors from around the
world, however, don't expect it to be a gay mecca. The island has beautiful
beaches, not sand but something in between sand and stones. Crystal clear
water, beautiful opportunities for snorkeling & scuba diving. Its wise
to make sure you have an umbrella and protection factor 20, as it can be
blistering hot. And blistering can be taken literally, you would not be
the first who needs to be spending a week indoor covered in scales from
sunburn.
If you hire a scooter or
a car, everything is possible to visit (but roads are often steep and poorly
maintained). Its especially nice with your own transportation when you
want to visit the more northern beaches and not the cruisy Elia beach or
spoiled by drunken straights beaches as Paradise beach. One thing you have
to do at least once is to take a beach-hop-ferry (read: small boat with
max. 10 people). Its a great experience. Yes, it takes a long time and
its not cheap, but you should do it at least once. You pay a fare for the
beach you want to go to, but the boat goes to all beaches.
The island is very small
and there's no sight seeing to speak of. People who visit Mykonos come
for the sun, the night parties at the beach (traveling by the busses that
go to all the party beaches for a few euro's) or strolling through the
romantic old town with a huge amount of churches (there seems to be a church
or room turned into a church on every corner). You can also get lost wondering
around the old city. Really get lost, that is!
Going out is very expensive.
6€ for a Diet Coke, up to 15€ for small cocktail. Most guys buy
beer at the supermarket and drink them just outside the terraces, in between
buying drinks at the bars. The gay bars have wonderful terraces, but only
a few have the "right price" to stay there for more than 2 drinks.
There is at least one cruise
ship a day arriving at Mykonos with new faces. Next to that, the ferry's
between the different islands and/or Athens leave in the evening, taking
island hoppers to new destinations. All in all, a lot of new people arriving,
and sometimes it a gay cruise ship!
Two excellent places for
"sunset" drinks are Kastros (watch the sunset to classical music) and the
Elyseum
Hotel Bar (high up, with stunning views across the town and bay). Before
midnight go on to Portos near the Town Hall, then after 2am on to Ramrod,
Icaros and the other gay bars just off "Taxi Square". To find them,
just follow the crowd! |
